Let's start with words. The root of "conservative" is "conserve." It has the same root as "conservation," as in, "Let's practice conservation so that we can conserve our natural resources."  It has multiple nonpolitical uses, as in, "Let's be conservative in managing Mother’s resources for her, to ensure that they outlive her."
