North Carolina historically favored Democrats for President from the end of Reconstruction to the mid-1960s, but not as monolithically as some other Southern states.

Republican President Teddy Roosevelt performed respectably in the state in 1904, garnering nearly 40% of the vote, compared to winning less than 6% of the vote in Mississippi
