NC Gains Two Democratic Congressional Seats in 2022 Election
Updated, Nov. 15, 2022: North Carolina’s court-ordered redistricting of the state’s congressional map for the 2022 election is far less gerrymandered in favor of Republicans than in the previous decade. The 13-seat delegation expands to 14 seats due to population growth, as tracked by the US Census from 2010 to 2020. The clearly unrepresentative ratio of eight Republican seats and five Democratic seats in this purple state was reduced by the state Supreme Court — which had a Democratic majority until 2023 — to seven Republican seats and six Democratic seats with one toss-up. After the 2022 midterms, the NC delegation to Congress changed to seven Republicans and seven Democrats.
The toss-up is the new 13th district near Raleigh in fast-growing Southern Wake County, combined with Johnston, half of Harnett, and half of Wayne Counties.
