North Carolina is one of the few Southern states where abortion is still legal beyond six weeks. But that might not be true for long if Republican legislators have their way. If they win super-majorities in the NC state legislature in 2022, they’ll be able to override vetoes by Governor Roy Cooper. They’ve already proposed severe restrictions, and could even make criminals out of expectant mothers, their doctors or anyone who assists in an abortion.

Many women from nearby states are desperately calling and traveling to NC for abortions because nearby states have banned it. More than a third of patients are from out of state.
