The U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1789, excluded “Indians not taxed” from the rights of U.S. citizens. It took Native Americans until June 1924, when the Indian Citizenship Act, aka the Snyder Act, was finally enacted, after President Calvin Coolidge, who claimed he had "Indian blood," promoted it.
