Queen Elizabeth’s death sparked a lot of thought and discussion in America about the differences in the cultures of our countries.

Europeans have historically viewed Americans as less refined, cruder, and less cultured. Maybe there is some truth to it. You don’t find working class stiffs in America who think attending a series of Shakespeare plays one weekend is their idea of a good time. I did encounter such a phenomenon in England.

My hostess on one visit, who didn’t speak proper English — subjects and verbs frequently disagreed in her lexicon — surprised me when she said
