After almost 20 years, the U.S. has withdrawn troops from Afghanistan. The Taliban, which first came to power in 1996 after seven years of chaos and civil war following Soviet withdrawal, has re-established its Islamic emirate. It provided a safe haven for the Al Qaeda terrorist group and its ringleader, Osama Bin Laden.
